Dionysos and
'un giro del vino'
through Italy

/
The wine god and
divine wine

We’ll look at paintings and statues of Dionysos, the Greek wine god – Bacchus in ancient Roman times -, a favorite subject for artists through the ages.

In between, we’ll take a wine tasting tour through Italian wine regions from north to south.

Dionysos & Bacchus

The god of wine, intoxication and drunkenness from the ancient Greek and Roman times was an interesting subject for painters and sculptors from the Renaissance onwards. He was portrayed as a small and chubby little fellow, drinking greedily from a bottle of wine to an old and obese drunkard, sitting lazily on a wooden wine barrel. Great artists such as Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Rubens thought it was worth immortalizing on canvas and in stone.

Italian wines from north to south

The history of wine growing in Italy goes back centuries. The Greeks gave the first impetus in the south and in Sicily. Now, wine is grown in almost every region of Italy, and the country has become the frontrunner in terms of the number of hectoliters of wine produced each year by a country. Also interesting is the rediscovery of authentic grape varieties that are replanted and cherished in Italy. In this ‘giro del vino’ we’ll drink wines from Piemonte in the north to Puglia in the deep south.
