Grüner Veltliner,
Gustav Klimt

We dive here into the life and work of the world famous Austrian painter from the late 19th century: Gustav Klimt.

In between, we can taste different types of Grüner Veltliners – the country’s national white wine pride – and a number of red indigenous Austrian wines.

Gustav Klimt

At the end of the 19th century, a movement of artists and architects emerged in Vienna – the “Vienna Sezession” – who no longer wanted to follow the existing rules of the conservative academies. They wanted to create “contemporary” art, which would also include applied art. They also found that art could play a certain role in social improvement. Gustave Klimt was one of the founders and first president of the movement.

The Grüner Veltliner

Viticulture in Austria dates back to Roman times, after which monks spread the vine further in the country. The center of viticulture is in the east around Vienna and to the southeast of it. Austria produces more white than red wines, of which the white native fresh Grüner Veltliner – the national wine pride  – is at the top of the list. The list of most widely planted blue varieties is led by the Zweigelt, followed by Blaufränkisch, both of which are also native varieties.
